Our mission

Molen de Ster build in 1739, is located on the Leidsche Rijn. The authentic and still working sawmill stands on a beautiful and quiet 18th-century industrial heritage. In the millyard, which is surrounded by water, there are also three monumental miller’s houses around a large lawn. The showpiece of the yard is the mill, a living monument! Reopened on June 22, 1999 after a major restoration, the mill can be admired and visited again.

On Saturdays Molen de Ster is the site of the millers. When there is enough wind there are sawing demonstrations. They also make beautiful wooden products from the local wood that has been sawn in the mill.

Our tour guides give free guided tours and bring the story of the mill to life.

Sterremolen Foundation

The Sterremolen Foundation was established on August 27, 1988 to realize the reconstruction of the sawmill de Ster at the Molenpark in Utrecht. Since the completion of the reconstruction in 1998, the Sterremolen Foundation has set itself the goal of preserving and promoting the cultural and historical value of the sawmill through sawing demonstrations and guided tours.

The foundation’s current policy is to bring together all those involved in the mill community and to promote the active use of the sawmill, as well as guided tours and a cultural program for visitors. The foundation also tries to assist or advise where necessary or desired with regard to the commercial exploitation of the mill and its maintenance.

Volunteers

The cultural and educational activities of Molen de Ster are run entirely by volunteers. They are the backbone that ensures that the mill can be visited by the public every Saturday and that guided tours are given to visitors and school classes. Together with the millers, they keep the story of Molen de Ster alive.

During cultural events, the culture volunteers are ready to give visitors a warm welcome and to make the event a success. They are the point of contact for visitors on those days and thus contribute to a pleasant experience of the mill.
